ADR UK (Administrative Data Research UK) has welcomed today’s (6 August 2019) appointment of the UK’s new National Statistician, Professor Sir Ian Diamond. Sir Ian will take up his role full time on 22 October 2019, succeeding John Pullinger, who retired at the end of June.
As National Statistician, Sir Ian will be Chief Executive of the UK Statistics Authority, Head of the Government Statistical Service, and Permanent Secretary of the Office for National Statistics (ONS) – a key ADR UK partner. Among a number of previous roles in social research and official statistics, Sir Ian was Chief Executive of the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) – ADR UK’s funder – from 2003 to 2004.
Welcoming Sir Ian’s appointment, Dr Emma Gordon, Director of ADR UK, said: “On behalf of the ADR UK partnership, I am delighted to congratulate Sir Ian on his appointment as the UK’s new National Statistician. Ian will bring a wealth of expertise and experience to this role, as an academic statistician and also because of the breadth of leadership roles he has covered. We very much look forward to working with him to improve the use of administrative data for research across both government and academia.
“I would also like to thank the previous National Statistician, John Pullinger, for his work over the past five years, during which he was a great advocate for increased use of administrative data for both statistics and research. We wish him all the best for the future.”
