Our Data Insights offer bite-sized snapshots of the findings of ongoing and completed research using linked administrative data.

At ADR UK, our goal is to enable greater access to public sector administrative data for research to inform policy that works better for all. Sharing the findings of the research we enable is key to achieving this, so that everyone from government decision makers to members of the public can find out what the data tells us, and where change could help to improve lives.

Data Insight: Growing up in kinship care

This Data Insight by Dr Joanna Soraghan and Dr Robert Porter explores the experiences of children and young people in Scotland who have spent time living with a family member or family friend while in care – known as ‘kinship care’. The Growing Up in Kinship Care study makes use of the Scottish Government’s Longitudinal Looked After Children dataset.

Data Insights: Commuting to work by bicycle reduces mental ill-health

It is well known that physical activity has a positive effect on mental health, but there is some debate over whether the domain in which individuals take part in physical activity is important. For example, does engaging in active travel to work have the same benefits as walking or cycling in your leisure time? Research shows that cycling to work, when compared to all other modes of commute, reduces the likelihood of experiencing mental ill-health - specifically anxiety and depression.

Were people who died at home less likely to attend hospital at the end of life during the Covid pandemic?

Previous SCADR (Scottish Centre for Administrative Data Research) analysis has demonstrated that deaths at home increased by over a third during the Covid-19 pandemic in Scotland. This research explores whether people approaching the end of life were less likely to go to hospital.
