Alexy Buck
Chief Social Researcher, Ministry of Justice
As Chief Social Researcher for the Ministry of Justice, Alexy is Head of Profession for 200 Government Social Researchers across the Ministry of Justice (MoJ), its agencies, and arm’s length bodies. She also oversees strategic priorities and significant research and evaluation programmes in the MoJ Analysis Directorate.
Alexy’s unit comprises three hubs: the Evidence and Partnerships Hub, the Evaluation and Prototyping Hub, and the Economics Hub. The Hubs maximise evidence for decision-making, embed ‘test and learn’ approaches, improve evaluation, and provide expert economic advice. As part of her senior civil service portfolio, Alexy is responsible for two high-impact published strategies: the MoJ Areas of Research Interest, and the MoJ Evaluation and Prototyping Strategy.
Alexy is passionate about the importance of external expertise in government decision-making: her team’s partnerships between the civil service, academia, and research funders are recognised as exemplars. She has championed and delivered on transformational programmes linking administrative data for research purposes, most notably the pioneering ADR UK-funded MoJ Data First programme.
Alexy has spent nearly three decades overseeing and delivering evidence for national policy-making, both in and outside of the civil service. She is a Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences.
