This course offers an introduction to the National Pupil Database (NPD). It will provide those new to the data with an overview of the administrative datasets of which it forms a key part, plus exemplar research projects, tips from expert users, and opportunities to ask questions. The UCL Centre for Education Policy and Equalising Opportunities (CEPEO) are offering this training opportunity in partnership with ADR UK.

Delivered by expert users of the data, this online training course will provide new users with insight into the content of the National Pupil Database (NPD) and how it can be used to address a range of interesting and policy-relevant research questions.
Session 1 will provide a high-level overview of NPD, Longitudinal Education Outcomes (LEO), Grading and Admissions Data for England (GRADE) and Growing Up in England (GUiE), and showcase some of the research questions that can be addressed using these datasets. For example, we will hear how researchers have been using the NPD to understand how schools can diversify their intakes; what new insights we can obtain about young people’s education and labour market trajectories and how they vary across groups from LEO; and about the impact of predicted, teacher-assessed grades on university application decisions using GRADE.
Session 2 will provide a more detailed overview of the application process associated with each of these datasets.
In the optional Session 3, participants will have the opportunity to book short one-to-one appointments to discuss questions relating to their own research questions or data applications.
A more detailed itinerary is available to registered participants.
