Training: Integrating Mixed Methods in Administrative Data Research

The course will guide attendees in structuring qualitative and quantitative designs, analysis, and integration within a single study, highlighting the unique opportunities and challenges of working with large-scale administrative datasets.

Participants will explore how to combine statistical insights with contextual understanding from qualitative sources to enhance the depth and impact of their research. 

The course covers: 

Session 1: Introduction to Mixed Methods 

  • Overview of mixed methods paradigms 
  • Rationale for using mixed methods in administrative data research 

Session 2: Designing Mixed Methods Studies 

  • Common designs: triangulation, embedding and connecting 

Session 3: Working with Administrative Data 

  • Strengths and limitations of administrative datasets 
  • Data linkage and integration with qualitative sources 

Session 4: Integrating Qualitative and Quantitative Data 

  • Techniques for integration 
  • Tools and software for analysis 
  • Addressing gaps and contextualising findings 

There will also be a number of case studies presented throughout the session.

This course is led by Dr Amanda Mason-Jones, ADR UK Research Fellow, Senior Lecturer in Global Public Health, University of York. Case studies will be presented by:

  • Dr Katie Hunter, ADR UK Research Fellow, Senior Lecturer in Criminology, Manchester Metropolitan University
  • Dr Carly Lightowlers, ADR UK Research Fellow, Reader in Criminology at the University of Liverpool
  • Leah McDonnell, PhD Candidate, Arthur V.Mauro Centre for Peace and Justice, University of Manitoba, Canada.
