3 September 2024
We are delighted to share the ADR UK Annual Report 2023 – 2024. Following a year of ambitious projects and significant progress, the report rounds up some key highlights across the ADR UK partnership.
This year, ADR UK agreed on the priorities and activities for the final two years of the current investment period, which runs until March 2026. This has enabled ADR UK’s core partners to allocate an additional £1.2 million in funding to key activities, renewing our efforts to transform research access to administrative data. Public good has remained at the core of our work, and this year’s report highlights the potential of recent developments to improve people’s lives.
As we work towards securing our next investment period beyond March 2026, it’s a good time to reflect on the impact of our programme so far. Given the already considerable achievements of the ADR UK partnership – a selection of which are highlighted in this annual report – I have full confidence in our direction as we build the power of administrative data research to deliver public good.

Scaling up the research use of administrative data
This year, ADR UK has continued to build the landscape of administrative data research. With over 8,000 accredited researchers, over 400 accessible datasets, and over 1,400 live and completed research projects, the programme is increasing the use of administrative data to deliver insights and evidence for the public good.
ADR UK partnerships between government and academia have enabled new datasets to be made securely available for research, as well as updates to enrich existing datasets and expand their potential. Browse the ‘New and emerging datasets’ section to see what’s new this year.
A key priority has also been enabling more streamlined access to this data for accredited researchers, to improve researchers’ experiences and increase the potential for public good outcomes. Putting people at the heart of our work
ADR UK is committed to meaningful public engagement, designed to promote an ongoing dialogue with the public about administrative data research. This year has seen innovative engagement initiatives with the voluntary and community sector, including the conclusion of the first cohort of an advisory group made up of care-experienced young people in Northern Ireland. There have also been developments across ADR UK’s suite of public panels, and strides made in our ambition to learn from and share good practice. Read this year’s public engagement highlights.
Across the partnership, ADR UK teams have also sought to build new connections and spread the word about the power of administrative data for research. The report highlights how we’ve engaged across the sector this year. ADR UK Ambassadors also play an important role, using their influence to advocate for increased use of administrative data across their networks. Hear from two ambassadors who joined the programme this year about their hopes for the role.
Delivering change: How our research is making a real-world impact
ADR UK exists to unlock the potential of administrative data for research and inform decisions in policy and practice that improve people’s lives. This year has seen this real-world impact come to fruition, with ADR UK research informing change in areas from suicide prevention to reducing criminal offending. Find out how our work is making a difference.
As we draw closer to the end of the current funding period, ADR UK remains ambitious to continue on this trajectory of impact. ADR UK has commissioned an externally-delivered evaluation of the progress, impact and economic benefits of the programme, to inform our business case for future funding.
