Data Insight: Deciding to have a Crown Court jury trial for a theft offence: Consequences, and relationships with ethnicity

This Data Insight investigates the consequences of a defendant electing to have a Crown Court trial, as compared to having their case heard in the magistrates’ courts, after pleading not guilty to an either-way theft offence. Either-way offences are offences that can be tried in the magistrates’ courts or in the Crown Court. The Data Insight also examines this decision in relation to ethnicity.

Young person's Data Insight: Childhood contact with social services and self-harm in young adulthood

This study looks at young adults in Northern Ireland (NI) and their risk of presenting to hospital with self-harm, or thoughts about self-harm and suicide (known as ideation). It asks whether risk is higher for young adults that were involved with social services during childhood.

Data Insights: Commuting to work by bicycle reduces mental ill-health

It is well known that physical activity has a positive effect on mental health, but there is some debate over whether the domain in which individuals take part in physical activity is important. For example, does engaging in active travel to work have the same benefits as walking or cycling in your leisure time? Research shows that cycling to work, when compared to all other modes of commute, reduces the likelihood of experiencing mental ill-health - specifically anxiety and depression.
